Are Audio Books Cheating?
As a librarian I hear this discussion often, that audio books aren't real reading, they are cheating and as a result, many kids are dissuaded from taking out audio books. So this is to set the record straight; Are Audio Books Cheating? Well that depends on how you define reading. If you define reading as the decoding of words where you break the letters into their sounds and then into spoken language then probably, audio books are cheating. But let's be realistic unless you a

Growing Our Library
Every 5 years, the library looks at its programs and services to see what needs to be implemented or improved. Your input is always appreciated, so we send out random surveys, polls or social media posts throughout the year(s) to get your opinions on what we've been doing. So, if you haven't seen the recent survey we're reposting it here. We ask that you please take the 2 minutes needed to fill it out and share your thoughts about our library.

February Book Recommendation
With its historic charm and picture-perfect library, the Maple Sugar Inn is considered the winter destination. As the holidays approach, the inn is fully booked with guests looking for their dream vacation. My Year in Books: a Challenge
When New Year comes around we're always thinking about the changes we want to make, our resolutions. At the library's circulation desk we see the books about better health, organizing your home, new theories on gardening, raising kids and becoming a better person. We've even seen those people who decide to read something different, so our mystery readers take out non-fiction, the romance readers checking out thrillers and so forth. Ultimately resolutions just seem to fade awa

January Book Recommendation
The story of two families living through World War II on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, and the shy, irresistible young woman who will call them both her own. As German bombs fall over London in 1940, working-class parents Millie and Reginald Thompson make an impossible choice: they decide to send their eleven-year-old daughter, Beatrix, to America. There, she'll live with another family for the duration of the war, where they hope she'll stay safe. Scared and angry, f

An Unusual Visitor
December was a bit slow for FeederWatch. Certain days had the feel of snow, but it was mostly rain and grayness. It was unusual as the count of birds and the variety seemed to drop, but that might have to do with some recent changes. It was towards the end of the month that our unusual visitor stopped by the feeder area - a wild turkey. Generally wild turkeys are not feeder birds, but that doesn't mean they don't occassionally visit to see what's on offer - expecially if you

December Book Recommendation
From the lighthouse sporting a huge wreath to the Christmas Stroll along its quaint streets, holidays on Nantucket are always magical. However, while the town might be aglow like a scene from Dickens tale, unfortunately for newly married island newcomer Nicole Somerset, Christmas means a dreaded visit from her step-daughter. Headstrong Kennedy brings with her a family of her own-- husband Archer and adorable 3 year old son, Maddox--but Kennedy's yet to get over her parents' d

A New Season Begins
Feederwatch has begun for this year. The birdseed finally came it, a little late is better than never. The feeders have only had nyjer seed in them, so of course it will take the birds a little time to realize that the good stuff is back. The weather has been a bit warmer than typical for this time of year, so many birds are still foraging naturally, but that doesn't stop the hoard of house sparrows from descending on the feeders. The unusual thing is that I haven't seen any

Peter Pan Book Hike
The afternoon of Tuesday, September 19, 2023, we held our fist book hike, celebrating J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan. This program was done in partnership with the North Smithfield Land Trust. We were able to create Neverland in their Booth Pond Conservation Area. While enjoy nature, families were able to "visit" areas from the novel and hear excerpt of the original read aloud at each location. While walking the trails we discovered a variety of mushrooms, acorns, rocks, pineconne,
