Technology Plan
2012-2015
Mission Statement:
The North Smithfield Public Library will provide diverse and easily accessible materials, services and programs in an atmosphere which encourages the free flow of ideas to educate, inform, enrich, and entertain local residents. Special emphasis is placed on supporting students at all academic levels and on stimulating young children’s interest and appreciation for reading and learning.
Vision Statement:
Patrons of North Smithfield Public Library will have electronic access to a collection of relevant materials to answer questions relating to school, work, and personal life and will receive assistance from knowledgeable staff in locating and using these resources.
Goal I: Enhance patron’s access to materials and information through technology (FY2012-2014)
Objective A: Evaluate and purchase e-readers which are compatible with the library’s electronic resources
Activity: Purchase at least two e-readers which can be loaned to patrons (FY2012)
Objective B: Promote the use of OSL’s E-Zone
Activity: Train staff on the use of e-zone(FY 2012)
Activity: Provide instruction to patrons for using E-Zone (FY 2012)
Activity: Provide an e-zone download station in the library (FY 2013)
Objective C: Provide basic computer classes to patrons on topics of interest.
Activity: Survey patrons to determine desired topics for computer instruction (FY2012)
Activity: Implement a schedule for computer classes (FY 2012-2014)
Objective D: Provide online resources which patrons can access 24/7 on subject areas which are of the most interest to them
Activity: Update the library’s web page regularly, check links and add content as needed (FY2012-2014)
Activity: Provide links on Library’s website to quality information relevant to patrons needs (FY2012-2014)
Activity: Instruct patrons on the use of, and the information contained on, the Library’s website through handouts and instruction (FY2012-2014))
Objective E: Provide patrons with e-reference services
Activity: Investigate various forms of e-reference to determine best fit for patrons needs and staff resources (FY2013-2014)
Objective F: Promote the use of databases and e-books to students
Activity: Inform teachers and students about the resources available through the library through handouts and/ or formal presentation (FY2012-2014)
Goal II: Expand the library’s collection beyond its limited shelving capacity by using digital resources (FY2012-2014)
Objective A: Provide library patrons with easy access to an expanded collection of library material. (FY2012-2014)
Activity: Institute a plan for the regular purchase of material for OSL’s E-Zone (FY2012)
Activity: Evaluate and add additional e-book subscription services (FY 2013-2014)
Activity: Evaluate and add databases not offered through OSL which are relevant to North Smithfield patrons (FY 2013-2014)
